Can It: Greater Boston Food Bank

The Greater Boston Food Bank is a local organization dedicated to providing needy individuals with meals, especially around the holiday season. After having conducted a detailed study on the existence of hunger in Massachusetts in 2005, the Greater Boston Food Bank was able to spread further awareness about this critical problem by noting that over 320,000 Massachusetts residents sought assistance in 2005.

Unfortunately, the statistics do not stop there, as a staggering 45 percent of those surveyed stated that they have been forced to choose between food and heat; furthermore, 39 percent had to choose between food and rent. Due to the fact that food, warmth, and shelter are all very basic necessities, the Greater Boston Food Bank has made it their mission to curb hunger, and the feeling of helplessness, altogether.

Insurers World employees participated in its own initiative called “Can It” in an effort to follow in the Greater Boston Food Bank’s altruistic footsteps. While this was IW’s third Can It food drive, it was the first in support of the Greater Boston Food Bank. IW’s food drive generated 230 pounds of food, which was subsequently donated to the Greater Boston Food Bank. As a thank you to its employees, IW purchased a pizza lunch for those who participated in this year’s Can It!
